  • 2013: The Year of Toya Delazy

Letoya Buthelezi, better known as Toya Delazy to you and me, seems to be having a pretty great 2013. Just last month the funky singer became a brand ambassador for LEGIT clothing and she also just added SAMA award winning artist to her resumé.

Now Toya can call herself a BET Nominated Artist. Yes, the Black Entertainment Television network announced their nominees for this year’s BET awards on Tuesday.

Toya was nominated along with Donald in the Best International Artist category. Toya and Donald are up against Ghana’s R2Bees and Nigeria’s 2Face Idibia and Ice Prince as well as Uganda’s Radio and Weasel.

Surprisingly, Drake leads the pack with 12 nominations - including five nods for 'Video of the Year', four for 'Best Collaboration' and a 'Best Male Hip-Hop Artist' nomination. Honestly, I wasn’t aware that Drake still made music that people actually listened to (yes, I totally went there). But if you scrutinise the nominations list, you'll see that he is mostly nominated for work that

  • It was the perfect crime.

The scene: thousands of Justin Bieber fans eagerly pestering their parents or unlucky guardians to chaperone the annoying Little Beliebers and buy them all sorts of Justin memorabilia. Then the flip side: thousands of parents and unlucky guardians queuing up at the bar hoping to drown out Bieber with a drink (but of course, nothing can really drown out the screams of hormonal teens).

The takings at the bar, food stalls and merchandise must have been quite a hefty sum on a weekend when the world’s biggest pop star and one of the world’s oldest rock bands (Bon Jovi, for those of you still guessing) were set to perform.

This made Soccer City in Johannesburg the perfect scene for the perfect crime.

Eyewitness News was only too happy to break the story of what they are dubbing #stadiumheist on Monday afternoon. It is reported that the suspects chiselled their way through double thick walls and managed to get into the safe room where all the weekend’s takings were Read More »from Everyone's talking about... • That’s a wrap for SAMA19

Now that we've recovered from our SAMA19 hangover, we can finally wish the star-studded event goodbye...until next year...

Sun City has had quite an eventful May; first they hosted the controversial Gupta wedding (we won’t even go there), then the 19th Annual MTN South African Music Awards, where celebs dressed very badly for SA music’s biggest night.

The festivities kicked off on Friday with some of our favourite artists walking off with awards. South Africa's first black Idols winner Khaya Mthethwa won 'Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album'. Don’t you love that we list R&B and Reggae as one category? Anyway, I digress. Back to the subject at hand. Our girl Lira walked off with the 'Best Live DVD' award while Zahara won 'Best Selling Ring-Back-Tone' for Loliwe.

But the “real” show went down on Saturday night when all the celebs flocked to see who would walk away with the major awards. This year the SAMAs belonged to Khuli Chana and Toya Delazy. Toya walked away with 'Best Newcomer' and 'Best Pop

  • Is fashion still exclusive?

The fashion industry has broken out of the cocoon and turned into an industry that is accessible to everyone…and we like that. Gone are the days of only making it if you were spotted by someone powerful within the fashion industry. Anna Wintour and Franco Sozzani can take a seat, thank you very much! With the advent of technology, we no longer need to look for approval from big names; we can upload our looks on Lookbook or blog about the latest style and watch it spread across the world faster than Beyonce lost her baby weight.

The line between fashion-conscious and stylish is being blurred at a gradual pace. Fashion is for anyone with a flaming personality and enough guts to dare to go against fashion conformity. There are some adrenalin-charged changes out there and you don’t need to be a fashion guru to like fashion but I just want to know, if that’s the case; is fashion still exclusive?

That’s what makes fashion unique. We all interpret it differently; we all have our own ideas of

  • Well-worn, anyone?

So Guess came up with an initiative Lord knows when, where they sold ripped and worn-out jeans to customers for around R3,000. People didn’t mind paying; well because…it’s Guess and their jeans generally look nicer when they have a slightly worn in look. Converse has done the same with their All Star Chucks. They call it ‘The Well Worn’ collection and they’ve added new colours like Tangy Red, Butterscotch and Turtledove (Turtlewho?).

I know they’re not second-hand, they’re just sold to you in an-already scruffy condition, but I’m  having trepidations about this. I’m all for brand loyalty, but let’s get real here, why would you buy All Stars that have already been dirtied for you? Where’s the fun in that? That’s like buying deboned ribs or prawns without the shell! I won’t deny, Chucks look more fly when they’re dirty; but the thrill of getting them dirty is what’s so appealing about them.

I have pairs and pairs of sneakers, but the ones with the most memories are my All Stars. The last

  • Bieberspotting

Last night the Twitter-sphere was atwitter over alleged Justin Bieber sightings at the Waterfront in Cape Town. But sorry to all the Beliebers who queued outside Hugo Boss to see the Justin Bieber lookalike; it was all a false alarm because The Beeb was reportedly stuck in Dubai due to some sort of flight delay.

But that didn’t stop ya’ll from going crazy on Twitter, even model and presenter Jo-Ann Strauss seemed to have hit her head and caught Bieber fever...

But then she revealed that she was just messing with you...

The folks at the Heat towers were more than happy to set the record straight...

And if you really believed that it was Justin Bieber at the Waterfront then you don't deserve to call yourself a Belieber; what kind of Belieber doesn’t check Justin’s Twitter page first?

I’m mostly grateful that Bieber Fever doesn’t seem contagious and my sanity is intact.

Cape Town will get to see the real Bieber in concert tomorrow night and Joburg gets their turn on Sunday (the day after the

  • Usher cast as Sugar Ray Leonard

Usher doesn’t seem to think that making money off selling his records is enough. The Grammy award winning singer has been cast as legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in a film that tells the story of when Roberto Duran beat Leonard back in the 1980s. I don’t know why these singers want to act; acting isn’t easy, have they learnt nothing from Beyonce? The film, Hands of Stone, will also star Robert De Niro so it might actually be worth watching.

The sexy singer has been told to drop six kilograms and become more toned... I’m not going to hate on that.

Watching a film where Usher will be topless for most of it...where do I sign up?

    Last Rounds...

When Beyonce told us to Bow Down she really meant it. Beyonce’s tour rider (list of demands whilst on tour) was allegedly leaked to the media last week and if it’s the real deal then it would seem like everyone is required to bow down to the King B!

Some of the strange things that she has requested include:
    -    Hand carved ice balls  (because normal Read More »from Usher cast as Sugar Ray Leonard
  • SAMA19 performers announced

Next weekend is when it will all be going down at Sun City when celebs, musicians and groupies all flock to the North West for the 19th Annual MTN South African Music Awards. And after last year’s amazing show, I really hope that the producers up their game.

Half the lineup for the star-studded event was revealed this week and by the looks of things it’s going to be a hot show. They obviously didn’t reveal all the live performances and surprise collabos because they want you to tune in to find out, duh.  They have revealed that there will be 120 individual performers. 120? I’m pretty sure they are counting the band members too, right?

Some of the performers include ChianoSky, The Muffinz, Toya Delazy, Kabomo, Zonke,  DJ Zinhle, Reason, Proverb, Desmond and the Tutus, Lira, Vetkuk & Mahoota and as they say in the TV commercials , “many many more.”

    I’m excited, are you?

  • Addressing the Megging Mess

I don’t know why we can’t just let men's fashion be. Women go through a lot of negative commentary for their personal fashion taste, but men get the worst treatment when it comes to their decisions. Pink golf shirts, tight pants, skinny jeans, harem pants and anything made from linen is seen as gay for men. Jean Paul Gaultier was one of the few designers who tried to make the men’s skirt popular when he introduced it in 1985 hoping it would catch on ...thank our mother Oprah, it didn’t. Men’s fashion has come a long way, so why do we feel the need to switch it up and add feminine elements or push for androgynous fashion that looks horrible? Why?

I had trouble picking up my jaw from the ground after I saw what everyone had been fussing over on the Twitter streets. Meggings. That is, leggings for men. I flicked through various images and saw them tried on as different looks, worn with different styles…it just didn’t work. Meggings are an absolute no, regardless of whether you’re metro Read More »from Addressing the Megging Mess
  • Do we really need a Vogue Africa?

For years, people have been calling on Conde Nast to give the people what they want – a Vogue Africa edition. There's a Vogue China, Vogue Latin America and Vogue India, not to mention a host of African models appearing in international campaigns, yet we still don’t have a Vogue Africa. Mario Epanya tried to spearhead the idea in 2010; to no avail. Apparently, we don’t have enough readers...despite the fact that we have a continent with over one billion people. Mmh.

We’ve made advancements on the international scene with Nigeria representing Africa in music, actress Terry Pheto in Hollywood and designers like David Tlale showcasing his collection at New York Fashion Week. So why can’t we, as Africa, dominate the fashion scene? Better yet, why do we feel that we need international approval in order to develop our fashion or to be taken seriously as contenders in the international market?

I’m cool with the decision to not have Vogue Africa. Why do we need it? We opt for worming our way
