  • 2013: The Year of Toya Delazy

Letoya Buthelezi, better known as Toya Delazy to you and me, seems to be having a pretty great 2013. Just last month the funky singer became a brand ambassador for LEGIT clothing and she also just added SAMA award winning artist to her resumé.

Now Toya can call herself a BET Nominated Artist. Yes, the Black Entertainment Television network announced their nominees for this year’s BET awards on Tuesday.

Toya was nominated along with Donald in the Best International Artist category. Toya and Donald are up against Ghana’s R2Bees and Nigeria’s 2Face Idibia and Ice Prince as well as Uganda’s Radio and Weasel.

Surprisingly, Drake leads the pack with 12 nominations - including five nods for 'Video of the Year', four for 'Best Collaboration' and a 'Best Male Hip-Hop Artist' nomination. Honestly, I wasn’t aware that Drake still made music that people actually listened to (yes, I totally went there). But if you scrutinise the nominations list, you'll see that he is mostly nominated for work that

  • Everyone's talking about... The Justin Bieber Stadium Heist

    It was the perfect crime.

The scene: thousands of Justin Bieber fans eagerly pestering their parents or unlucky guardians to chaperone the annoying Little Beliebers and buy them all sorts of Justin memorabilia. Then the flip side: thousands of parents and unlucky guardians queuing up at the bar hoping to drown out Bieber with a drink (but of course, nothing can really drown out the screams of hormonal teens).

The takings at the bar, food stalls and merchandise must have been quite a hefty sum on a weekend when the world’s biggest pop star and one of the world’s oldest rock bands (Bon Jovi, for those of you still guessing) were set to perform.

This made Soccer City in Johannesburg the perfect scene for the perfect crime.

Eyewitness News was only too happy to break the story of what they are dubbing #stadiumheist on Monday afternoon. It is reported that the suspects chiselled their way through double thick walls and managed to get into the safe room where all the weekend’s takings were Read More »from Everyone's talking about... • That’s a wrap for SAMA19

Now that we've recovered from our SAMA19 hangover, we can finally wish the star-studded event goodbye...until next year...

Sun City has had quite an eventful May; first they hosted the controversial Gupta wedding (we won’t even go there), then the 19th Annual MTN South African Music Awards, where celebs dressed very badly for SA music’s biggest night.

The festivities kicked off on Friday with some of our favourite artists walking off with awards. South Africa's first black Idols winner Khaya Mthethwa won 'Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album'. Don’t you love that we list R&B and Reggae as one category? Anyway, I digress. Back to the subject at hand. Our girl Lira walked off with the 'Best Live DVD' award while Zahara won 'Best Selling Ring-Back-Tone' for Loliwe.

But the “real” show went down on Saturday night when all the celebs flocked to see who would walk away with the major awards. This year the SAMAs belonged to Khuli Chana and Toya Delazy. Toya walked away with 'Best Newcomer' and 'Best Pop

  • Bieberspotting

Last night the Twitter-sphere was atwitter over alleged Justin Bieber sightings at the Waterfront in Cape Town. But sorry to all the Beliebers who queued outside Hugo Boss to see the Justin Bieber lookalike; it was all a false alarm because The Beeb was reportedly stuck in Dubai due to some sort of flight delay.

But that didn’t stop ya’ll from going crazy on Twitter, even model and presenter Jo-Ann Strauss seemed to have hit her head and caught Bieber fever...

But then she revealed that she was just messing with you...

The folks at the Heat towers were more than happy to set the record straight...

And if you really believed that it was Justin Bieber at the Waterfront then you don't deserve to call yourself a Belieber; what kind of Belieber doesn’t check Justin’s Twitter page first?

I’m mostly grateful that Bieber Fever doesn’t seem contagious and my sanity is intact.

Cape Town will get to see the real Bieber in concert tomorrow night and Joburg gets their turn on Sunday (the day after the

  • Usher cast as Sugar Ray Leonard

Usher doesn’t seem to think that making money off selling his records is enough. The Grammy award winning singer has been cast as legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in a film that tells the story of when Roberto Duran beat Leonard back in the 1980s. I don’t know why these singers want to act; acting isn’t easy, have they learnt nothing from Beyonce? The film, Hands of Stone, will also star Robert De Niro so it might actually be worth watching.

The sexy singer has been told to drop six kilograms and become more toned... I’m not going to hate on that.

Watching a film where Usher will be topless for most of it...where do I sign up?

    Last Rounds...

When Beyonce told us to Bow Down she really meant it. Beyonce’s tour rider (list of demands whilst on tour) was allegedly leaked to the media last week and if it’s the real deal then it would seem like everyone is required to bow down to the King B!

Some of the strange things that she has requested include:
    -    Hand carved ice balls  (because normal Read More »from Usher cast as Sugar Ray Leonard
  • SAMA19 performers announced

Next weekend is when it will all be going down at Sun City when celebs, musicians and groupies all flock to the North West for the 19th Annual MTN South African Music Awards. And after last year’s amazing show, I really hope that the producers up their game.

Half the lineup for the star-studded event was revealed this week and by the looks of things it’s going to be a hot show. They obviously didn’t reveal all the live performances and surprise collabos because they want you to tune in to find out, duh.  They have revealed that there will be 120 individual performers. 120? I’m pretty sure they are counting the band members too, right?

Some of the performers include ChianoSky, The Muffinz, Toya Delazy, Kabomo, Zonke,  DJ Zinhle, Reason, Proverb, Desmond and the Tutus, Lira, Vetkuk & Mahoota and as they say in the TV commercials , “many many more.”

    I’m excited, are you?

  • Africa’s Next Top Model

So… do you want to be on top? Well this could just be your chance. Tyra Banks very happily announced that there will be an Africa’s Next Top Model hosted by Nigerian model Oluchi Orlandi.

I can’t believe that we are only getting an African version now when America is on cycle 20 and there is pretty much a Next Top Model franchise in almost every other country in the world.  Can I also just mention that the American version has just become ridiculous with things like the “booty tooch” (a pose with your butt sticking out) and “pot ledom” (its ‘top model’ spelt backwards and one season the contestants even made a song about it).

Anyway, we can only hope that the African version is going to have a little more class. The show is set to start filming in Cape Town in August and most of it will take place in South Africa. Oluchi is not only the host but she is also the executive producer. You go, girl. Models will be selected from 8 countries throughout the continent.

So I’ll ask again… Do you Read More »from Africa’s Next Top Model
  • Die Antwoord take on Hollywood

After the great success that was District 9, Neill Blomkamp is at it again. The South African director is reportedly set to start filming his new film Chappie in September in Jozi, and guess who he has cast?

    Die Antwoord.

Yes, the zef group will allegedly be playing themselves, and if they’re in the movie then it must be a sci-fi, right? Yolandi Vi$$er hinted to this collabo with Blomkamp when she said in the lyrics of Baby’s on Fire “Neill Blomkamp’s making me a movie star.” Rumour has it that they have been cast as the leads in the film but I refuse to believe that Blomkamp is that stupid.

The budget for the film is US$50 million, which is puny for a Hollywood budget but convert it to rands and you have a big budget film in SA.

In the meantime we can look forward to Blomkamp’s next film Elysium which wasn’t shot in Mzansi but stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.  You can take a peep at the trailer here.

    Happy Friday.

  • Happy 1,000th episode, V Entertainment

Tonight V Entertainment celebrates their 1,000th episode and who better to rein in on the celebrations than Nonhle Thema. You’ll remember that Nonhle was the original host of V Entertainment with Siya back in the day but ever since her crazy Twitter meltdown, Vuzu has since moved on.  (She once had a go at me on Twitter but that’s a story for another day).

Nonhle is not the only attraction on tonight’s show – it will also showcase a dinner table conversation between people like your gurl ‘B’ Bonang Matheba, everyone’s favourite gay Somizi, ‘It’ girl Minnie Dlamini, Boity (the girl everyone confuses with Minnie), namer and shamer Mika Stefano, named and shamed Shashi Naidoo, quick-tongued Kuli Roberts, rappers L-Tido and Morale, and Vuzu’s favourite reality show kids the Fly Chix and TalAssMo.

With a guest list like that, you know it’s going to be one helluva show.

So make sure you catch it tonight at 18:00 on DSTV channel 116 and I’ll happily throw in a *seriouslyyyyyyyyyyyyy* just for

  • Congrats on the divorce, Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is no longer a married woman; meaning she is now free to marry Kanye West...if she wants to. Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian finally reached a divorce settlement after a whopping 536 days since their marriage ended. Yes, their divorce proceedings lasted longer than their 72 day marriage. The reason why the divorce took so long is because Kris was suing Kim for fraud, claiming that it was all a publicity stunt. The terms of the settlement are confidential (that won’t last long) but rumour has it that Kris got nothing. If that’s true then ...eish!

Did anyone else get extremely jealous when you saw the MTN SAMA tweets about this year’s goodie bag?

Yes, the people at the SAMAs spent all of Sunday making me feel very envious about not being a real celebrity when they didn’t stop tweeting about the gift bags for this year’s music awards.

The 19th MTN SAMA Awards will take place on the 10th and 11th of May at Sun City. Anyone want me to be their date?Read More »from Congrats on the divorce, Kim Kardashian
