Katie Holmes is "all right" in the wake of her separation from Tom Cruise and a looming custody battle.
The former Dawson's Creek star – who filed for divorce from Cruise last week after five years of marriage – spoke to a journalist as she was doing some grocery shopping for an apparent Fourth of July barbecue.
After she was asked how she was doing, Holmes apparently told the New York's Daily News reporter: "I'm all right. Thank you."
The actress was spotted shopping at a Whole Foods store yesterday (4 July) where she stocked up hamburger meat, buns, strawberries and bananas and pushed her six-year-old daughter Suri around in a cart.
Later, the star's lawyer father Martin Holmes was spied bringing along a custom-made cake to the three-bedroom New York City apartment which Holmes has occupied as she filed for divorce.
When asked how his family was doing, Martin replied: "We're fine, thank you."
Holmes and Suri were also photographed getting ice cream in the city, with an eyewitness telling People that: "Katie looked happy and was friendly to the customers and staff while Suri sat on her mum's lap."
Cruise – who turned 50 on Tuesday (3 July) – had planned to spend his birthday with Holmes and Suri after returning from filming his new movie Oblivion in Iceland.
Instead, he travelled to Los Angeles to spend the milestone birthday with his adopted teenage children with second wife Nicole Kidman: 17-year-old Connor and 19-year-old Bella.
